I achieved the infallible treasure, and then lost it!
So my heart abandoned body and home,
And became a tantric yogi,
Going to Vṛṇdāvana with my senses as his disciples.

Listen friends, Kṛṣṇa is like honey.
Greedy for it, my mind
Has thrown away all duties in the world,
Become a yogi,
And gone begging.

The circle of Kṛṣṇa’s dance
Is the perfect conch-shell earing
Made by the master-craftsman, Śuka.
I put that earring in my ear.
The begging bowl I hold is made of a gourd called “thirst.”
The bag of possessions over my shoulder
Is full only of my hopes.

Worry is the cloth around my body,
Dust and ash besmears me.
“Ha! Ha! Kṛṣṇa!” is all I can wildly say.
Anxiety binds twelve bracelets to my wrists.
Greed ties the turban on my head.
Getting no donations,
My body has become emaciated.

Vyāsa, Śuka and many yogis,
Of Kṛṣṇa’s pure unadulterated self,
Of all his pastimes in Vṛṇdāvana,
In books like Bhāgavatam
Have made poems
That I constantly hear and recite.

My ten senses become my disciples,
I take the name “Mahā-Bāula” (Great Madman)
And go off with my disciples.
My body, my home,
My objects of enjoyment, my greatest treasures,
I throw it all away and go to Vṛṇdāvana.

Amongst the people of Vṛṇdāvana,
Moving and non-moving,
Trees, creepers, householders, and saints,
I beg at each of their doors
For fruits, roots, and leaves to eat.
This I do with my disciples.

The flavor of Kṛṣṇa’s qualities, beauty,
Scent, sound, and touch,
The Gopīs perfectly enjoy all of them.
The crumbs they leave behind,
My five disciple-senses bring to me,
And by such alms I can continue living.

In the corner of a solitary grove,
I obtained a hint of union in contemplation on Kṛṣṇa.
So, I stay there with my disciples.
Kṛṣṇa’s pure and unadulterated self,
I witnessed in my own mind,
So, I remained awake in meditation throughout the night.

Then, bereft of that union with Kṛṣṇa,
My morose mind becomes even more unified with Kṛṣṇa.
That intense unity puts me through ten phases.
They so agitate my mind,
That it flees,
Leaving behind my body like a vacant house.
