What is “Affection”?

This is how the Chinese / Japanese depict the concept of affection… the character for it “suki” (好) has two components:

  1. 女 – the character for female
  2. 子 – the character for child

What a mother feels towards a child is the essential nature of “affection” – according to this Kanji character.

The word is used with various “volume” or “degree” or “intensity” to denote different levels of affection – everything from, “yeah, I like pasta.” (hai pasuta ga suki desu, はい、パスタが好きです。) to “darling, I love you” (anata ga daaaaaisuki desu, あなたが大好きです。)
